The EX89™ combines the heritage influences of the 1989 GEL-EXTREME basketball shoe with modern cushioning. The original was developed in the late 1980s by Toshikazu Kayano. It was his first design for ASICS. The layered leather construction of the upper features a color block design in the colors of the iconic team uniforms of the time. Added to the heel wedge is FF BLAST™ cushioning. Combined with these technologies, the shaped heel works shock-absorbing in everyday situations. The layout of the outsole depicts the aerial view of a city. This functional grip was originally inspired by the designer's first business trip to the United States in 1987.
